This interactive training will explore the nature of conflict, impacts of crime, and victim/offender needs. Grounded in principles of restorative justice, participants will be introduced to different intervention processes, including mediation, conciliation, restorative action and group conferencing. This training will prepare individuals to work as a third-party facilitator for those directly impacted by crime to identify their needs as wellas the interests of their communities.
This course is designed to build knowledge and inspire the change needed to work toward reconciliation. Centred in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Principles of Reconciliation, the course will help participants develop a deeper understanding of our shared history, current realities and the work of the TRC. The day will also include practical ways for supporting reconciliation work, including how to implement the TRC Calls to Action.
In this engaging, hands-on workshop, participants will get their first taste of a comprehensive model for conducting interpersonal mediation while also getting a “snapshot” of the role of the professional mediator. A process that typically unfolds over a period of weeks or months will be explored over 5 action packed days. Skills related to conducting initial interviews, co-mediator planning, follow-up preparation/coaching, and carrying out joint meetings in workplace and/or community-based situations will be explored and practiced. Practical tools and practice are augmented by rich discussion throughout related to key concepts, frameworks and assumptions, all aimed at helping participants gain a solid, basic grasp of the process.
This course represents an intensive opportunity to integrate the concepts, models, and skills learned during the other courses offered in the mediation specialization. Participants pursue these goals by engaging in role play practice (in groups of 3 or 4) before spending significant, additional focused time reviewing the practice sessions in more detail under the guidance of an experienced mediator and coach (Note: The ratio of coaches to participants is approximately 1-3). For most training participants, the completion of this course serves as the capstone (final course) towards acquiring a Mediation Skills Certificate.
